Music Therapy for Seniors
John Hill is a professional entertainer who specializes in providing music programs for older adults throughout New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
There is a healing power in music. It soothes discomfort, recalls happy memories, and refreshes the spirit. No wonder music therapy has become an important ingredient in wellness programs for seniors’ around the world.
Assisted Living, Nursing Homes & Community Centers
According to John, “My experience with music therapy started many years ago as a hospice volunteer. I would visit folks in their homes and care facilities and bring along my guitar. I immediately saw first hand the positive effect music had for helping my clients, and their family members too.”
Today, John has nearly 100 clients throughout the region and performs hundreds of programs every year for senior citizens within a variety of living communities and care centers, such as:
-
Community Centers

John is a solo act, he plays acoustic guitar and sings, accompanying himself with harmonica. John’s focus is on first generation country music by artists like Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and many others. He also has an extensive repertoire of Gospel songs and 20th century standards. John says, “Some folks really like my singing, for others my guitar playing stands out. The Harmonica seems to set me apart as well. Sometimes people even like my jokes!”
John has put together themed programs and provides entertainment for special events events, such as:
-
Spiritual Songs and Gospel Music
-
Train Songs and Travelin’ Tunes

Aside from great music, John places a heavy emphasis on socialization before, during, and after each performance. He typically arrives early and stays late and likes to leave plenty of time to talk individually with as many residents as possible. He likes to provide historical context and personal stories about the songs as well. John says “Some of the greatest rewards come when I see folks in the audience singing along, or when they relate their own personal memories about the songs I've been playing.”
